A biomechanical assessment answers a specific question: **is the way you load your feet and legs the reason something further up is hurting?** It is the appointment to book when the pain keeps coming back after treatment, or when one side of your body keeps producing problems and the other does not.

We examine the foot and leg at rest, then watch what happens when you put your weight through them and when you walk. Where running is the issue, we film you. The point is that a foot at rest tells you very little. **A foot under load tells you almost everything.**

## What it can explain

Heel and arch pain, forefoot pain, recurring ankle problems, shin pain, knee pain including the kind that arrives at a predictable distance into a run, and some hip and lower back pain. It also explains **uneven shoe wear**, which is often the first clue somebody notices themselves.

## What happens afterwards

Sometimes the answer is a change of footwear. Sometimes it is a specific strength programme, because a foot that collapses under load frequently does so because the calf and hip cannot control it. Sometimes it is an off the shelf insole. And sometimes it is custom orthotics, which **we will recommend when your mechanics genuinely need them rather than as a default**.

What is a biomechanical assessment?

An examination of how your feet and legs load when you stand, walk and run, aimed at finding the mechanical reason something is hurting. A foot at rest tells you very little, so the useful part is watching what happens under load, on video where running is the issue.

Will I be told I need orthotics?

Only if you do. A good proportion of assessments end with a change of footwear, a specific strength programme, or an off the shelf insole. Custom orthotics are recommended when your mechanics genuinely need them, not as a default outcome.

Can it explain knee pain?

Often, yes. Knee pain that arrives at a predictable point in a run, or that keeps returning after treatment aimed at the knee itself, frequently starts with how the foot and hip are controlling load. That is exactly the kind of problem this assessment is for.
