Deep tissue massage works more firmly and more specifically than a relaxing massage, into muscle and fascia that is tight, overloaded or restricted. It suits the areas that have not shifted with lighter work, and the tension that builds from training hard, sitting badly or carrying something heavy for a living.

## How deep is deep

Deep enough to feel like work, and **never so deep that you cannot breathe through it**. This is not a competition and there is no benefit in enduring more than is useful. You set the pressure and you can change your mind at any point during the session.

## Will I be sore afterwards

Possibly a little tender the next day, in the way a decent gym session leaves you. **You should not be bruised, and you should not struggle to move.** If a deep tissue massage anywhere has left you like that before, tell us and we will work differently, because that is a sign of too much rather than of thoroughness.

## When to have it, and when not to

Good a few days after a hard training block, or when a specific area has been tight for weeks. **Not the day before an event, and not on a fresh injury**, where firm work into an area that is actively inflamed will set you back rather than help. If you have a new injury, book a physiotherapy assessment instead and we will tell you when massage becomes useful.

Drink some water afterwards and do not plan anything strenuous for the rest of the day.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Is deep tissue massage supposed to hurt?

It should feel like work and stay comfortable enough to breathe through. There is no benefit in enduring more than that, you set the pressure, and you can change your mind partway through. Pain that makes you tense up is counterproductive.

Will I be sore the next day?

Possibly a little tender, much as after a good gym session. You should not be bruised or struggling to move. If a deep tissue massage has left you like that before, say so, because it is a sign of too much pressure rather than of thorough work.

Can I have it on a new injury?

Not usually. Firm work into an area that is actively inflamed tends to set things back. Book a physiotherapy assessment instead and we will tell you when massage becomes useful, which for many injuries is a couple of weeks in.
