This is the appointment for **the injury that keeps coming back**. The knee that flares up at eight miles. The calf that goes every autumn. The shin pain that returns three weeks into every training block. Treating the sore part again will settle it again, and it will happen again, because the sore part is the symptom rather than the cause.

A running assessment films you running, usually on a treadmill, and looks at how you load each leg, what the foot does at contact, and what happens to your hips and trunk as you tire, because form at mile one and form at mile ten are different things.

## What we do with what we find

We connect it to the injury you actually have. Sometimes the answer is in your running, meaning cadence, foot strike or how you are landing relative to your body. Frequently it is **not in your running at all but in what is missing behind it**, because a hip or calf that cannot control load will produce the same injury however well you are told to run. Most often it is a bit of both, plus an honest conversation about training volume.

Gareth Klepacz has trained and competed in track, road and cross country running for thirty five years, has run internationally and still races for Southampton Athletics Club. If you want to talk about why the same thing keeps happening in week four of a marathon build, you are talking to somebody who has been there.

## Should I change my running technique

**Usually less than the internet suggests.** Wholesale changes to how somebody runs frequently create new problems, so we change the specific things worth changing and leave the rest alone. The assessment is **£90** and runs up to an hour.

## Frequently Asked Questions

What happens in a running assessment?

We film you running, usually on a treadmill, and examine how you load each leg, what your foot does at contact, and how your hips and trunk behave as you tire. We then connect that to the injury you keep getting and identify what is worth changing in your running and in your strength work.

Will you tell me to change how I run?

Only where it is genuinely worth it. Wholesale changes to somebody's running technique often create new problems, so we change specific things and leave the rest alone. Frequently the answer lies in strength and training volume rather than in technique at all.

Is it worth it if I am not a fast runner?

Yes. This appointment is about why an injury recurs, which has very little to do with pace. Recreational runners building up for a first half marathon get as much from it as club runners chasing times.
