Sports massage is soft tissue work aimed at muscle that is tight, overloaded or restricted. It is genuinely useful as part of a training week, it helps after a hard block of work, and it is one of the more pleasant ways to look after a body that is being asked to do a lot.

Because we sit **inside a physiotherapy clinic rather than a spa**, there is a useful safety net. If something found during a massage looks as though it needs assessing properly, you will be told, and there is a physiotherapist along the corridor.

## Sports massage or physiotherapy

This is the question worth getting right before you book, because it decides whether you spend your money well. Massage treats the muscular part of the picture. **It will not resolve a tendon problem, a joint that is stiff for a mechanical reason, or a pain that travels down a limb.** If that is what you have, an assessment first will save you money, and we would rather say so than sell you a course of massage that was never going to fix it.

If what you have is tight, overworked muscle and general soreness from training, sports massage is exactly right.

## When to book it around training

For most people, **a few days after a hard session or a race rather than the day before an event**. Deep work can leave you slightly tender for a day, in the way a decent gym session does, so it is not what you want in your legs on the start line. If you are working towards a specific event, tell us and we will plan it around the date.

Thirty minutes is **£55** and an hour is **£90**.

## Frequently Asked Questions

Should I have a sports massage or see a physiotherapist?

If the problem is tight, overworked muscle and general training soreness, sports massage is right. If you have a specific injury, a stiff joint, or pain that travels down a limb, book a physiotherapy assessment first, because massage alone will not resolve those and you would be paying for the wrong thing.

How close to a race should I have one?

Not the day before. Deep work can leave you slightly tender for a day, which is not what you want on the start line. A few days after a hard session or race is usually better, and if you have an event date, tell us and we will plan around it.

Will it hurt?

It should be firm enough to feel like work and comfortable enough to breathe through. It is not a competition, and it should not leave you bruised or struggling to move the next day. If a massage anywhere has done that to you before, say so and we will work differently.
