Gareth works out why feet and legs hurt when there is a mechanical reason behind it. Heel and arch pain, ankle and knee pain that turns out to start at the foot, recurring lower limb injuries in runners, and the assessment that decides whether custom orthotics are genuinely worth their cost. He treats people of all ages and activity levels.

## Background

Gareth qualified from the University of Southampton in 2003 and immediately began a postgraduate programme in clinical biomechanics, which is the field he has worked in exclusively ever since. He has provided local orthopaedic triage services for the health service, was clinical lead for biomechanics, and for a time chaired the regional expert reference group for biomechanics.

## Running injuries

Gareth has trained and competed in track, road and cross country distance running for 35 years. He has run internationally and still competes for Southampton Athletics Club. That matters if you are a runner, because the conversation about training load, mileage and why the same calf goes every autumn is one he can have from both sides.
