Mummy MOT

£115
60–90 mins

A Mummy MOT is the postnatal check you deserve.

The appointment includes a look at your abdominal muscles including any separation, at your posture and your breathing, a pelvic floor assessment, and at how your body is coping with the daily business of lifting a child who gets heavier every week. You leave with a clear picture of what is going on and a specific programme.

It is recommended that women have an initial assessment at six to eight weeks postnatal, but we also treat women who gave birth years ago and may still have a tummy gap or related pelvic floor issues, including bladder, bowel or sexual dysfunction.

More information

When should I have one

From around six to eight weeks after birth is the usual answer, once you have had your GP check. That said, a Mummy MOT is genuinely useful at six months, at two years and at six years. Plenty of the women we see come in long after they thought everything had healed, because something still does not feel right.

What actually happens in the appointment

We talk first, about the birth, about how you are feeling and about what you want to get back to, whether that is running, lifting at work or simply getting through the day without discomfort. Then we assess. That includes measuring any separation of the abdominal muscles rather than guessing at it, and assessing how the pelvic floor is actually working.

An internal examination is often the most accurate way to assess the pelvic floor, and it is the part people worry about. We will explain exactly what it involves before anything happens, it is entirely your decision, and there is a great deal we can assess and treat without one.

What do I leave with

A programme specific to you, an explanation of what we found, and an honest answer about how long we would expect things to take. If we think you need a different service, or your GP, we will tell you that instead.

Babies and toddlers are welcome in the appointment. It is a physiotherapy clinic, not a library.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Mummy MOT?
A Mummy MOT is a detailed postnatal physiotherapy assessment covering the pelvic floor, the abdominal muscles including any separation, posture and breathing, followed by a treatment programme specific to what the assessment finds. It is carried out by a physiotherapist who has trained as a Mummy MOT practitioner and is longer than a standard pelvic health appointment.
How long after birth can I have a Mummy MOT?
From around six to eight weeks after birth, once you have had your GP postnatal check. There is no upper limit that makes it pointless. Many of the women we assess are months or years past birth and still benefit, because pelvic floor and abdominal function respond to training at any stage.
Do I have to have an internal examination?
No. An internal examination is often the most accurate way to assess how the pelvic floor is working, and we will explain exactly what it involves before anything happens, but it is entirely your decision and we can assess and treat a great deal without one.
How much does a Mummy MOT cost at Healthflex?
A Mummy MOT is £115 for a 60 to 90 minute appointment. Follow up appointments are charged at the standard pelvic health rates, which are £72 for 45 minutes and £62 for 30 minutes.
Can I bring my baby to the appointment?
Yes. Babies and toddlers are welcome, and most women bring them. We would rather you came with your child than did not come at all.
