Chiropody

£50
From 30 mins

Chiropody is the routine care of the foot that addresses problems caused by mechanical overload and ill fitting footwear. Toenails that have become too thick or painful to cut, or an ingrown toenail. Corns or calluses that can make standing and walking uncomfortable, plus the problem of thickened skin and cracked heels. Advice can also be given on dealing with stubborn or painful verrucae.

Our chiropodist, Catriona Flynn, spent seventeen years in the NHS specialising in diabetes and wound care, which is exactly the background this work benefits from. She is available for appointments on Thursdays.

More information

Is chiropody the same as podiatry

No, they are two different disciplines, although they are closely linked. Chiropody is the care of the foot itself, meaning the skin and nails. Podiatry deals with the mechanics, meaning why the foot hurts when you walk on it and how that affects the joints above. The training is the same, so our clinicians can practise both. If you are not sure which you need, ring reception and describe the problem, and they will book you in with the right clinician.

Why not just do it myself

Most people manage perfectly well. It becomes worth having done professionally when the nails are too thick or you cannot reach them comfortably, when something is painful, or when the skin is breaking down. If you suffer with diabetes, poor circulation or neuropathy, or are a patient medically at risk, possibly taking blood thinners or steroids, a badly cut toenail or a self treated corn or callus can carry a real risk that is easily avoided.

Diabetes and circulation

If you have diabetes, tell us when you book. Reduced sensation in the feet means a small injury can go unnoticed and progress, so routine care is done more carefully and we check the things you cannot feel. NHS guidance recommends at least an annual foot check for everyone with diabetes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need chiropody or podiatry?
Chiropody covers routine care of the skin and nails, which is nails, corns, callus, hard skin and verrucae. If your problem is mechanical, meaning the foot hurts when you walk or load it, book a podiatry appointment with gait analysis instead. If you are unsure, ring reception and describe it.
When is it worth having my feet done professionally?
When nails have become too thick or awkward to cut safely, when something is painful, or when skin is breaking down. If you have diabetes, poor circulation or neuropathy, or are medically at risk, possibly taking blood thinners or steroids, a badly cut toenail or a self treated corn or callus can carry a real risk that is easily avoided.
How much is a chiropody appointment?
A standard chiropody session is 30 minutes and costs £50.
When is Catriona available?
Catriona holds chiropody appointments on Thursdays at The Edge. Ring reception on 01428 642577 to book, or use the online booking link.
