Neurological physiotherapy is physiotherapy for a nervous system that has been injured or is changing. The problem is not only the muscle, it is the signal reaching the muscle, and treating that well takes somebody who works in this field week in and week out.
This is the part of Healthflex we are best known for locally, and it is why people travel to us from Godalming, Farnham, Petersfield and further out. Very few private clinics in this catchment offer neurological rehabilitation at all. Kathryn Lewis has specialised in adult neurological rehabilitation since 1986, including work at the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at the Homerton Hospital, and Anneke Webb led physiotherapy at a brain injury rehabilitation centre in London for seven years.
More information
What an assessment involves
More than an assessment for a sore joint, and it takes longer. We look at strength, at tone and stiffness, at balance, at how you walk, at how safely you get in and out of a chair or a bed, and at what you want to be able to do that you cannot do at the moment. That last question shapes everything else, because a programme aimed at getting back to the garden is a different programme from one aimed at getting back to work.
Is it worth starting a long time after the event
Often yes. Improvement does not stop at six months or at a year. NICE guidance on stroke rehabilitation supports continuing rehabilitation for as long as a person is still making progress towards their goals, and where a condition is progressive the work is about holding on to function, confidence and independence for longer.
Treatment at home
Where getting to the clinic is the hardest part of the appointment, we treat at home. A home visit is £95. Clinic appointments, both the initial neurological assessment and follow up sessions, are £82.
