Kathryn is the reason people travel to Healthflex for neurological rehabilitation. She treats adults after a stroke, and people living with Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury and brain injury, working on balance, walking, strength and the practical business of getting safely in and out of a chair. She also treats general musculoskeletal problems.
Background
Kathryn qualified from Kings College Hospital in 1986 and went to the Middlesex Hospital to specialise in neurological rehabilitation. From 1988 she worked at St Bartholomew's and at the Regional Neurological Rehabilitation Unit at the Homerton Hospital, and from 1990 she spent five years at Harrowlands Young Disabled Unit in Dorking before moving into private practice. She is a chartered member of the Chartered Society of Physiotherapy.
That is close to four decades of working with neurological conditions, almost all of it hands on with patients rather than at one remove.
How Kathryn works
Neurological rehabilitation takes longer than a course of treatment for a sore knee, and the assessment at the start is correspondingly longer. Kathryn will want to know what you want to be able to do that you cannot do at the moment, because that is what the programme is built around. She is happy to involve family, and she would rather teach the person helping at home properly than have them guess.
