Musculoskeletal physiotherapy

£62–£72
30–45 mins

Musculoskeletal physiotherapy is the broad heading that covers most of what we do. Something hurts, or something no longer moves the way it should, and it has not settled by itself. We work out why that is happening, treat it, and give you the programme that keeps it settled.

That covers backs and necks, shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands, hips and knees, feet and ankles, and the long standing aches people have stopped mentioning because they assume nothing can be done. It also covers the problems that are not where they hurt, which is a surprisingly large share of them. A knee that aches after a long walk often starts at the hip or the foot.

More information

What happens at the first appointment

We ask about the problem and about your life, because the two are connected, then we examine how you move. By the end of the session you should understand what is going on, what we can do about it, and roughly how long we expect it to take. Treatment usually starts in that same appointment rather than at the next one.

Do I need a scan first

Usually not. Most musculoskeletal problems are diagnosed from your history and a proper physical examination, and NICE guidance is generally against routine imaging for common problems such as low back pain, because it rarely changes what the treatment should be. If we think a scan or an orthopaedic opinion is genuinely needed, we will tell you and write to your GP.

How many sessions will it take

That depends on the problem, and anybody who gives you a number before assessing you is guessing. Some straightforward problems settle in two or three appointments. We will give you an honest estimate after the assessment, and we will say so if we do not think physiotherapy is the right answer for you.

I could not recommend Healthflex enough. Martin was such a pleasure to deal with, very knowledgeable and friendly, he helped me getting rid of pain and numbness in my hand by methodically identifying the source of the problem and eventually referring me the right surgeon. He made me feel comfortable right from the start, shown great care and attentiveness to my case and has been following up with me throughout even after I stopped seeing him for weeks. Thank you!

Huge thank you to Martin for treatment, advice and directions. Martin is outstanding physio. This is the only second time in the last ten years I was in need of his service. First time when Haslemere chiropractor treatment resulted in serious physical injury. Martin treatments were invaluable on my long road to recovery. This time again the help received by me was just outstanding. I learned the hard way that physiotherapy is the safest therapy for all. It’s gentle and effective. I am so glad I have made the call….

Frequently Asked Questions

What does musculoskeletal physiotherapy treat?
Problems affecting the joints, muscles, tendons, ligaments and nerves. In practice that means backs and necks, shoulders, elbows, wrists and hands, hips and knees, feet and ankles, sports injuries, and pain that has built up gradually through work or training rather than from a single incident.
Do I need an X-ray or MRI before physiotherapy?
Usually not. Most musculoskeletal problems are diagnosed from your history and a physical examination, and NICE guidance advises against routine imaging for common conditions such as low back pain because it seldom changes the treatment. If a scan or a consultant opinion is warranted we will say so and write to your GP.
How much does an appointment cost?
An initial physiotherapy consultation of 45 minutes is £72, and a standard treatment session of 30 minutes is £62. Package prices are available for longer rehabilitation programmes after surgery.
Will I get treatment at the first appointment?
Almost always. The first appointment is a full assessment, but once we understand the problem we normally begin treatment in that same session and give you something to work on before you come back.
