Post-operative and orthopaedic rehabilitation

£62–£72
30–45 mins

Surgery is the beginning of the job rather than the end of it. A new knee or hip will only do what the rehabilitation afterwards teaches it to do, and the difference between a good outcome and a disappointing one is very often what happened in the twelve weeks after the operation.

We rehabilitate people after knee, hip and shoulder replacement, after ligament reconstruction including ACL surgery, after shoulder and rotator cuff repair, and after the smaller procedures that still leave a joint stiff and a limb weaker than it was. One of our clinicians, Nick Thornhill, spent part of his NHS career at the Royal National Orthopaedic Hospital in Stanmore working in complex orthopaedic care, which gives him a valuable insight into this clinical area.

More information

Working to your surgeon's protocol

Most consultants issue a rehabilitation protocol, and where you have one we work to it rather than around it. With your permission we will write to your surgeon and your GP so that everybody is aiming at the same milestones. If you do not have a protocol, we will build the programme from the operation you had and how you are progressing.

Package prices

Rehabilitation after surgery runs over a course of appointments rather than one or two, so we offer it as a package paid in advance. Four sessions are £240, eight are £460 and twelve are £670. Those work out cheaper than the same number of individual appointments, and they are only for post-surgical rehabilitation.

How soon after surgery should I start

Usually sooner than people expect, and often within the first week or two, though it depends entirely on the operation and on what your surgeon has advised. Get in touch before your operation if you can, because knowing what the rehabilitation will involve makes the first fortnight considerably less daunting.

I could not recommend Healthflex enough. I had an ACL reconstruction in August 2020 and I was referred to Martin Dyer by my surgeon. I can see why! Martin could not have done more to get me back up and moving right the way through lockdown. It is 7 months and he has already got my doing a bit of jogging. Cycling is a piece of cake. I am so grateful to all he has done for me as I was concerned I would never get back on the road. He has shown me anything is possible. Big thanks. I could not have done it without him.

Frequently Asked Questions

How soon after surgery can I start physiotherapy?
Often within the first week or two, but it depends on the operation and on what your surgeon has advised. If you can, contact us before the operation, because understanding the rehabilitation in advance makes the early weeks much less daunting.
Do you follow my surgeon's rehabilitation protocol?
Yes. Where your consultant has issued a protocol we work to it, and with your permission we will write to your surgeon and GP so everyone is working towards the same milestones rather than pulling in different directions.
What do the rehabilitation packages cost?
Four sessions are £240, eight sessions are £460 and twelve sessions are £670, paid in advance. They are cheaper than booking the same number of individual appointments and are available for post-surgical rehabilitation.
Which operations do you rehabilitate?
Knee, hip and shoulder replacement, ACL and other ligament reconstruction, rotator cuff and shoulder repair, and smaller orthopaedic procedures that leave a joint stiff or a limb weak. If we are not the right service for your operation we will say so.
